Back to Where the Bullets Hit the Sky

Nothing is what it used to be,
then again
maybe nothing is supposed to be
what it used to be
because nothing would be
what it’s supposed to be now,
if it was
and, so,
maybe now is just a time
or a moment of awareness, as in
today is just like another session

I love early morning drives.
I love them just before
the sunrise,
and I love how
the sun comes up from the east
which is just behind me
and I can see the sunrise mirrored
on the reflecting windows
on the eastern facades of the buildings
on the other side
of the 59th Street Bridge.

I believe in the benefit
of what I call
an honest assessment
so that at the end of the day

In fairness,
I am not sure about
the exceptions to the rule

And we go back
to where the bullets hit the sky

Today is about love,
also known as Valentine’s Day
however, my love is not limited

of what love is, or isn’t,
nor is my love
limited to a commercialized view
of what love should become.

Do you remember the innocence
of looking upwards at the sky?
Picture this –
just around the Fourth of July
and looking up
to watch the sky bloom
with rockets full of color
and the explosions of sparks
and streams, and the aahs
the ooohs,
and the mesmerizing
moment when it’s okay
to be amazed
by purity.

I remember . . .

There are no laws that say
this is the way to go
or not.
Life is not rigid
but bendable,
changeable,
and malleable, to which
this means life will
shape and mold as we go
and rest assured,
be prepared for changes
and surprises
and in the element of unexpectedness
be aware that life is always
evolving
and in the end
so are we.

No one talks about life,
or real life, and no one shares their truths
or tells about the hard times
or the unwanted parts of life
like, when your heart breaks
or when life takes place
and you find yourself
in the bottom of a bottomless pit
which, by the way,
seems as though
the bottom keeps falling,
yet—
we all know about this.
