Everything Fell Where They May

Here it is, world. I am here.
Send me, I say to which I know. I say this out loud and to an empty room but to hell with it all!
At least I say this for myself. At least I say this here and now because if not now, then when?

Right?

I am told let the chips fall where they may is an old term that came from lumberjacks.
I did a little reasearch on this and for the record, I do not want to act like I knew about this beforehand.
I only knew about the saying because I heard someone say, “Let the chips fall where they may!”

Lumberjacks would say this they were chopping wood.
The meaning for this comes from the need to focus on the task at hand. Understand?
You cannot always worry about the sidelines or the distractions.
You have to focus on your job and do your best.
This means a lumberjack has to chop away and they cannot worry about the pieces or the chips of wood that fly from the trees
They have to let them fall where they may.

The same is said about wood chippers too. The wood has to be chipped, right?
So, you can’t worry about the chips themselves or where they fall.
At the same time, err on the side of caution, which means that yes, there’s a job to be done and yes, there are dangers and risks and of course, we need to be careful and err on the side of caution, but the chips will always fall where they may.
These things are out of our control.

I want to keep this honest. Therefore, I expose my lack of knowledge when it comes to history. However, I thought a little research would help me with this journal before opening this up to you and the world around me.
The line, “let the chips fall where they may,” became famous when American Politician Roscoe Conkling gave a speech in 1880.
Conkling was a New York State senator
He said, “hew the line of the right and let the chips fall where they may.”

Back in June of 1989, there  was a movie that came out.
One of the characters was known as “Da Mayor,” to which he told the main character Mookie, “Always do the right thing.”
Needless to say, the name of the movie was Do The Right Thing, from Spike Lee

I was told that if I do the right thing, then the right things happen.
I cannot always agree that this is always so.
Then again saying what is or is not the right thing is often relative and usually subjective.

I was told “you have to be good to live good.”
I was told the best revenge is good living.
At the same time, I always wondered about this because good living has nothing to do with revenge.

I have told you that I truly believe the best revenge is not to think or feel or have the desire to get revenge at all.
But in all honesty, I am not at that level.
I admit to the flaws of my own ego and I certainly admit to the faults of my sheer pettiness.
Then again, maturity comes in time.
I am often as mature as the typical fourth grader and yet, there are times when I show improvement.
There are times when I show my best version of grace and perhaps I can compete at the eighth or maybe the ninth grade level.
But who is to say?

I don’t know if we ever “get over” someone or something.
Pain hurts in different ways.
I know that all things can and will change, regardless of how hard or tightly we hold onto them.

I cannot say that I have the ability to forgive. I cannot say that I don’t have thoughts of vengeance.
No.
Not at all.
I have these thoughts.
And I have them all too often.
I spun a man around at a roadside rest stop the other day and had a quick but intense conversation with him.
he asked me if I was serious.
I answered him, “yes,” but when I answered him, I answered him emotionlessly.
Was this pride?
Was this ego?
Or was this a case that the man was wrong and needed to be corrected.
I would say yes to all of the above.

I want to poke the bear.
I want to create chaos
I want revenge too.
But what purpose does this serve?
To what avail?
What will this gain and where will this take me?

The main focus is this:
Do your job and let the chips fall where they may.

So . . .
Here I am world.
Send me.

I like this idea
I think I’m going to run with it
